National Families Week: Celebrating every family, everywhere

Held from 11 to 17 May this year, National Families Week is a time to celebrate the important role families play in teaching, supporting and nurturing children as they grow.

Practitioners often need to consider the ways in which family connections and history can impact children’s mental health and wellbeing. Our free Intergenerational mental health course supports you to apply an ‘intergenerational lens’ to your work with children and families, helping you understand their history of challenges and strengths.

Dr Anagha Jayakar: When you're examining, be mindful, sensitive and look at the strengths of the baby when you're describing anything, so the parents feel joy in their hearts.

New podcast episode: Championing infant mental health capability in paediatric care

Paediatricians are trusted entry points for families seeking mental health support. They are uniquely positioned to provide developmental assessment, early relational support, prevention and timely intervention – but this requires the right skills, structures and supports.

In this episode, Dr Victoria Carter and Dr Anagha Jayakar explain how they are championing infant mental health through the delivery of a targeted workforce development program for junior paediatricians.

Why systems change is needed for family mental health: Insights from Dr Melinda Goodyear

When a parent experiences mental illness, the effects are often felt throughout the family and across generations. While there are interventions that can support families through these experiences, change is needed to implement them across health and social care systems.

In her recent paper published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, Dr Melinda Goodyear, our Chief Advisor of Policy and Impact, collaborated with over 100 experts from 17 countries to reflect on what it takes to embed sustained, family-focused systems change. The message from this research was clear: no single lever is enough.
